Remember in the late 80’s, early 90’s, when you used to listen to the Smiths all the time and I thought they were dumb? Well you were right and I was wrong and I’m sorry.
You know, funnily enough I have recently been thinking the exact opposite? “You know how I thought they were so awesome and you thought they were dumb? You were right and I was wrong.”

iPhone Moving Beyond AT&T in 2010? Maybe →
I am especially looking forward to when this happens, because one hundred thousand especially loud bloggers will immediately take it for granted, and find a new thing to complain about the iPhone with. And three weeks later, they’ll have forgotten, ever, about how important this was to them at the time.

So how does everyone feel about this? I suppose it makes a lot of business sense, but I can’t help but be a little sad. I can’t really place why, though. I was happy about the Pixar acquisition. But this one, I think, messes with my childhood a smidge too much.

New Order spin-off band Bad Lieutenant to play UK... →
So we’re gearing up for one of those interesting periods in the life of an English pop band, this time with New Order. New Order has split, and two bands have come out of it - Peter Hook’s Freebass, and Bernard Sumner & Phill Cunningham’s Bad Lieutenant. Both are readying albums - the first Bad Lieutenant track appeared on their Myspace page recently.

The Cranberries to reform for US tour | News |... →
One time in 1995 or so I got so sick of my sister playing the Cranberries that I took the CD out of the player, walked into the street and shattered it with a baseball bat.
That being said, I do think I’d like to see this show.
My sister was always smarter than me.
As he told us, “…[I]ndividual faults and frailties are no excuse to give...

Halting Recovery Divides America in Two - WSJ.com →
Whenever you ask “how’s work?” This is a pretty excellent overview of the s**t that is going down in the world that has nothing to do with a small business’s profit or loss or clients or how things are going - the world around them has changed markedly, and it’s having some serious ramifications. It’s kind of fascinating, in a way, to watch the world change...
Obama to Reappoint Bernanke as Fed Chief - WSJ.com →
My friends Ryan, Rob and I had a long argument about this very topic at a ridiculous tropical restaurant in Chinatown this weekend. Rob’s position was that Obama, like most presidents, pretty much had to keep Bernanke. I think he had some flexibility - the amount of criticism was strong enough that he could have gone either way. Personally, I am glad for this, and I’m also pleased he...

More Parents Thinking Kids are Spoiled →
heyitsnoah:
Last month I wrote about an article outlining why old people think young people are spoiled. Well, the author has written a followup, this time outlining two more factors: Social mobility and increasing resource inequality. It’s another great and simple explanation of some economics/sociology stuff.
The best part, though, might be in the footnotes where the author wonders aloud...

Felix Salmon offers a take on the financial crisis I hadn’t heard (or thought of) before:
One of the themes of my talk was that it wasn’t an excess of greed and speculation which led to the financial crisis, but rather an excess of overcaution, with an attendant surge in demand for triple-A-rated bonds. Investors didn’t want risk, and investment banks made billions of dollars,...
JWT, WPP Sued Over TV Advertising for Microsoft's... →
This article is interesting, not necessarily because of the topic, which is mildly interesting to those of us who follow holding company antics. It’s interesting rather because it’s totally not clear what is actually happening, and every comment after the article asks the same question: “how can this company patent the technique of using television sets for product...

Does the world need digital strategists? »... →
Noah pointed me to an interesting article over on the Naked blog from a few days ago about whether or not the world needs separate digital strategists.
I think it’s an interesting debate, and from the implciit perspective of where the author is coming from, I think he’s dead on - there’s a toolset to gain mastery of in digital, but from any other perspective, it’s not...

Publishers Are Killing Web Advertising’s Potential... →
This is a really interesting article. There are parts of it that are a little beyond my expertise, and a few things I don’t necessarily agree with, but I do think it’s premise that there is less different between print ads and interactive than we suppose is cathartic. And I think his rallying cries for publishers are a good move. Advertisers - and especially the media companies - are...

I am very happy about this. I have been following the schadenfreude around The Weinstein Company, and I had read somewhere that supposedly everything was riding on this film. I’m glad it did well.
